Construction products manufacturing returned to business as usual in Q3 after the weather-related pauses and subsequent catch-up in the first half of the year. Britain’s £56 billion industry is cautiously optimistic that the year will finish strong with sales anticipated to pick-up in Q4.

HS2 Sparking Wider Regeneration

Phase 1 of the HS2 project is set to play a key role in parts of Great Britain where HS2 hubs will be built, unlocking an enormous rise in wider regeneration and investment in residential, commercial and infrastructure projects. Five GB regions are reaping the benefits of £7.2 billion of work awarded contracts, including West Northamptonshire which had a 200% increase in construction contracts awarded in 2017.

London overtaken by rest of Great Britain in housebuilding growth

London’s homebuilders have been outpaced by the rest of Great Britain as investment in housebuilding dropped to its lowest value in six years. Residential contracts awarded in London in 2017 were 34% lower than the value awarded in 2016, which is in contrast to the majority of regions outside of the capital that experienced growth.

Construction’s Tale of Two Quarters

The latest data release from the ONS, published today, shows that construction output rose 0.9% in the second quarter. This follows a 0.8% fall in Q1, in which activity was disrupted by severe weather conditions. Compared to a year earlier, output increased 0.8% and quarterly industry output has returned to £40.9 billion, matching the level recorded at the end of 2017.

Construction Industry Begins its Catch-up

Activity in the construction supply chain significantly picked up in the second quarter of 2018 as the industry began its catch-up of work lost due to delays related to Carillion and severe weather conditions in Q1, according to a survey of product manufacturers, contractors, civil engineers and SME builders by the Construction Products Association.
